LOCAL LANDSCAPES

These are inspired by walks in the local fells and dales. Quick sketches are made whilst outside. Then the paintings are worked back at home remembering the shapes and colours which combine to create the space and beauty of the outdoors through the seasons.

Painted as a contribution to the ‘Kindness’ exhibition at the King Street Studios, Lancaster, to co-incident with Mental Health Awareness Day on 10th October 2020.

The pandemic has been a such an unpredicted and difficult time for many.

I live in a small village community and have seen how fear and anxiety have affected people in different ways. There have been divisions and even hostility at times but also immense kindness, generosity and community spirit.

These were especially difficult times for the elderly, those living alone, recently bereaved or suffering from mental health problems. Winter in particular was hard, with it’s shorter days, making it difficult to see others and find healing activities outside.

This painting is intended to be a reminder of the beauty of winter but also the need to reach out to each other, especially those who felt isolated during those months.
